Recall Notice

Post by lezmtaylor » Wed May 22, 2019 12:22 pm

Just got a recall notice for'' checking driver's airbag and replace if necessary''.
Now my car is a 2002 4.4.
That is 17 years old.
Also it has an E46 paddleshift wheel fitted which is a different size airbag and the wheel is smaller.
I suppose I had better ring them and see what gives.

It’s likely to be the same issue that is affecting literally millions of cars fitted with a particular manufacturer’s airbags made in the early 2000’s. We have had both E46 front (driver’s and passenger’s) airbags replaced. The issues cover far more than just BMW.

The Driver’s airbags have been found to contain ‘damp’ gas generator powder and the Passenger one apparently has a ‘weak gas generator’ cartridge which produces copious shrapnel! Not what you want in your face!

I’m impressed that even now the manufacturers are still on the hook for this. It is a simple change (for the wheel) and a little more involved for the dash mounted one.

I have the e46 m3 steering wheel fitted and I fitted paddle shift to it but the X5 airbag was a straight forward swap. BMW changed the airbag even though the wheel was non standard X5

So, how do I find out if my car is eligible for that recall? It’s a 2001 4.4.

Contact your local BMW Dealership and give them your VIN.
