Automatic headlights and angel eyes

Post by ttr » Sat May 25, 2019 1:12 pm

Eh up all,

Been a while since I’ve been on, car has been running great ( kiss of death now....) and enjoying the driving.

Daft question time - feel free to poke fun 😁

Is this correct please, noticed today that when I have my auto headlights switched to on the angel eyes were not lit up in daylight?

I covered the sensor on windscreen and they came on along with sidelights.

Took it off and all lights went off.

I really thought the angel eyes were on all the time even in daylight on auto lights were on?

Is it me and my memory or I’m simply going daft!

Looked in manual and it did not help ?

All response welcome

Cheers in advance

Alan / Marti

You are probably right - I could have sworn that the angel eyes cam on like DRL s but am probably wrong.

Never actually looked at the front whilst driving 🙄

Just wanted to make sure nowt gone wrong with lights, hopefully what I’ve got is “normal” and it’s just me.

BTW Why is the emojee so big in my first post I didn’t do that ?

Any more replies more than welcome

Cheers alll

The E53 never had ring DRLs - the "angel eyes" or halos are the "park lights" and function just like regular park lights on other cars.

In some countries (e.g. USA) the inner lamp on each (Xenon) headlight runs at a low power as a DRL, anytime the car is running. These also light up brighter when "flash-to-pass" (FTP) is activated. High beam is just a raised position on the Xenon lamp.

In NZ (and I'm guessing also in Australia and the UK) the inner lamp is just the high beam (and FTP), along with the raised Xenon level. No DRL function.

Angel Eye (Halo) DRLs arrived with the E70.

I thought the angel eyes came in with the e53 face lift (lci).

Correct - they did. So any discussion about Angel Eyes automatically infers we are talking about an LCI car...

Many aftermarket headlights for the pre-facelift cars include Angel Eyes but all bets are off as to how they are wired and operate etc. :P

Oh, I see the confusion - I worded that poorly.

ANGEL EYES came in on LCI E53 - but they are NOT DRLs - parking lights only.

ANGEL EYES as proper DRLs came in on the E70 - at least as far as X5s are concerned.

Wpoll

Cheers gents - that clarifies things nicely

Mines a facelift but I thought they were on as angle eyes, only in daytime when on auto lights.

My mistake, it makes sense now.

Cheers all
