Long Time since I posted........my 4.8is now available

Post by CondorX5 » Sun Sep 08, 2019 11:40 am

Not posted for ages partly due to struggling to login when the site changed ages ago and serious illness of a close family member.........still running my E70 which is now over the 100k mark and our lovely old 4.8is, the subject of so many posts (and much input via the BMW Extended Warranty) was running well as a second car as my partner really wanted to keep it when i acquired the e70...........until 2 weeks ago.

Sadly, the coolant hose gave way on the motorway and dumped all the coolant very rapidly on the road surface. Following recovery, it looked fairly easy to fix and a new water pump and expansion tank were fitted - around £500 of work from a decent local non-specialist indy - but it seems there is a bigger problem and there is still a coolant leak and I have decided to give up and offer the car for sale as is - will describe it in full detail in the for sale section - as there is no local specialist BMW indy whom I trust and I don't have the funds needed for an indy to do all this work. An enthusiast with their own workshop, on the other hand, would be able to repair it, I am sure.

The car has a long MOT until July 2020 and was until a few weeks ago, covered under the extended BMW warranty and has had virtually everything replaced - all the parking sensors (several times), amplifier, tuner, pano roof cassette, alternator, Steering rack, rear wiper mechanism, door locks / window mechanisms, full air suspension - bags and control unit - bluetooth module, satnav unit (twice!) and more I can't remember right now. there is a fortune's worth of spares and parts - including the rare petrol Thermotop parking heater, and brand new spacesaver spare. Being the Le Mans special edition, the car was very high spec anyway, and has front and rear heated seats, front and rear climate control, BMW OEM Towbar with removable hitch, compass in rear view mirror etc. The seats are black nappa leather, electric fronts, no rips at all. Rear seats hardly used. Body in good order - bumps and scuffs / scrapes commensurate with age.

Tyres have done less than 1000 miles - have about 6-7mm tread all round, new discs and pads front about a year ago. The 18" winters are on at present on original BMW alloys.

The 20" original alloys are also available - no tyres fitted to them at present though.

I need the car gone asap as have bought an elderly XC90 Volvo D5 for partner - it is arriving in a week. The car starts and drives fine, but very quickly runs out of coolant so would be dicey for any long distance unless you are travelling in tandem and have loads of water to top up with!! Best trailered away.

V5 and both keys present.

Looking for £1900 or best offer as it needs to be gone asap hopefully to a new home where it can be fixed, but it is otherwise a great source of parts some of which are very hard to find or perhaps a project for an engine transplant of one of the diesel lumps............

Please PM me - will reply as soon as possible. Car needs to be collected from the Midlands, near Derby.

Really sad to read this Condor as I know just how much this car has meant to you, how well you have looked after her and how much you care.

Sorry to hear this and I can only mirror what X5Sport has said. I think most who have had E53's have enjoyed the time they have spent with them.
Best of luck with the replacement

Well, the old girl has made the long journey down to Coops.......and he is having her restored back to her former best. So glad she avoided being broken for spares.........best of luck Coops, hope you love her and own her as long as I did!!

Replaced with a Volvo XC90 Sport SE Geartronic with a few extra toys, old one from 2008 - is our second car, I still use my E70 40D Msport as my daily driver.

The Volvo is our first - how amazingly well built it is, too. Apparently starship mileage is attainable with relative ease, so looking forward to that!

Thanks Condor- arrived all well.

Work starting soon after many sharp intakes of breath. The main worry is the extend of the blown head gasket (huge variation on pressure tests) and whether the cylinders, block or head were damaged.

Diagnosis will cost a small fortune but once it’s done we’ll know where we are. Will provide updates!
