Are their updates available for the antiquated CD system??

Yes, you can do a direct swap to the MKIV system which is DVD based. A lot of members have done this upgrade.

Plenty of units available on ebay, usually around the £300 mark but you can get them cheaper. Also note that the Mini and Range Rover use the same unit, so don't forget to look at those as well when searching.

I have looked at those units but ain't got £300 spare at the mo. Can I just get a new CD to slot in?

I think if you follow the letter of the agreement that comes with the map disc, even making your own backup copy whilst keeping the original is ilegal.
