Diesel smell from cold

Had my 3.0D a few weeks now, just noticed recently the smell of the exhaust fumes is quite strong. Noticed when I started the engine then went to put something in the boot.

Is this normal for diesel engines? Might sound like a daft question but its my first diesel engined car i've owned.

The car has 122k on the clock, but drives fine and only notice any smoke when I floor it after a few miles steady driving.

You might want to check filters, the service records might help.
Air filter and crankcase breather are prime suspects (about an hours work) but also the diesel filter might help.

According to my service records (BMW agents) air filter was changed at 12K only and not again until I did it at 130K.  It cured the black smoke on acceleration problem.  :smoke:

Just realised I have probably made an error in the title... I was not referring to the smell of diesel. It is a general dirty engine smell, if that makes sense.

According to the garage where I bought it, he had all the filters changed approx 7k ago.

I think given the mileage of the car I should get them all changed anyway for piece of mind, along with a full service.

yep and maybe ask them to check for any leaks in engine, exhaust etc perhaps? you should not notice the 'smell' of an engine IMHO, other than perhaps its a new smell to you never having owned a diesel?

I get some black smoke on my 2005 X5 but only when I floor it on the motorway and the smoke goes away. I do tend to change my air filter. Anything else I should be looking at?

I think its just a case of its new to me, but I will let the mechanic no next week when I get it serviced. Although it was supposedly done 7k ago with new filters, i'm getting the lot changed again for piece of mind.

I mentioned the gearbox oil to him, and he thinks there'e no need to change it with it being lifetime. He is happy to do it but the oil is a fortune apparently, so i'll probably just leave that. Any thought?

The only other niggle is i've noticed a knocking from the rear, usually at slow speed. As though there's something loose in the boot... wishful thinking lol. More likely a suspension issue I reckon. A good time to get it checked over I think !

As regarding the gearbox oil,  ive just had mine changed and the mechanic ( auto transmission specialist )who did the oil and fiter change  , recommend 's that they should be done at about 50k as he has rebuilt absolutely loads of them and gearbox failure may have not occurred and at £180 I didn't think it was too badly priced , imho a oil and filter change on any engine/gearbox/diff is cheap maintenance and piece of mind.

I've noticed occasionally is I get my foot down from low speed, changin into 3rd I think, I sometimes get a sort of squeak as it changes up. Its only occasionally though, but it did prompt me to look into having the oil changed. But then again it could be something different all together.

You say there is a gearbox oil filter to be changed as well?

According to DIS this is due to 'changes in the gear oil properties' (W2460_TSG007).

Action: 'The gear oil must be changed twice according to the specifications'.

I've been getting that squeak for years - the dealers I used to have it serviced at refused to acknowledge the issue.  I took it to them several times to have them diagnose this under approved used warranty but they denied any such issue existed and the time I insisted in taking an engineer out on a test ride to demonstrate the dam thing wouldn't make the noise.  I only know it's a real 'thing' now as I got DIS installed earlier and looked it up.  Dealers really are ba$t&rds...

Horror stories of transmissions failing after an oil change make me a bit reluctant to do that.  Kind of catch 22..
