I have no idea how I missed this thread even when I searched, I must automatically ignore the sticky topics at the top  :-[

I started a thread the other day asking about the Viper system, I'm thinking of getting one and wondered what extras anybody may have fitted etc.

I just had the Viper kit fitted to my xDrive 35d, fitted by Secure My Car.
OBD is isolated and keys can't be cloned now without the original one being there.
It also sounds a warning if anybody stands next to the front windows.

Thanks for that BullyB.
How are you getting on with the system?
We live in the country in Lincolnshire but do visit our daughter in South London every 2/3 months or so.
Am taking delivery of a 2011 X5 4.0D Sport next week so that is why I am interested.

I think it is great. The warning sounds if anybody stands too close to the front windows.
The blue LED lights the inside at night as a deterant.
Not been nicked yet...

Just a thought on this security issue  ;).
While I am now retired I was a fully trained auto electrician many moons ago and the following thought has occurred to me.
To prevent vehicle thefts on vehicles with electric fuel pumps we used to fit a switch (either a simple flick one or a key operated one) in the power supply cable, after the fuse, to the pump. This switch would be placed in a discreet position in the front of the car but somewhere where it could be reached by the driver. Normally it would be always left switched on, but if the car was left somewhere suspect or long term in a car park then you would switch it off, obviously meaning that the vehicle could not be driven off.
With modern CANBUS systems is there any reason why this same method would not work? Would it throw up an error that could only be cancelled by a visit to a stealership?
Does anyone with the knowledge of modern vehicle electrical systems have any comments on this?

I would not expect the pump itself to throw an error if switched off, but the low fuel pressure would if you forgot to turn it on again.  I might be wrong though.

When the fuel pump relay failed on my E53 there were no errors logged which is why it took them nearly a day to find the fault, and ten minutes to fix it!

For those with keyless entry systems, this WILL be of interest.

The BBC are running a story on Watchdog and there is this article on the BBC news website regarding cars with keyless entry systems.  This goes wider than just BMW/Audi and includes Landrover and others.....even Ford and 'White Van Man' are now a target!

Someone in my street had their E70 stolen this way a while back - i know because they saw my car  (also E70) and stopped by to warn me.
Shortly after I got the "security upgrade" done by the local dealer although it seems there's still a problem.

I've got an F15 now (nealry a year in), and my existing insurer happily changed over the vehicle at the time but pulled out of the market when my renewal date came round. I should add, no claims, full bonus aged late 40s... but parked on the street in S London.

I don't blame the insurers, I blame the theiving gits that nick the cars. At least there's an upside to the F15 being so fugly though.... it seems the RRS desirability extends to the tea leafs as well.
Current: M50i arctic grey (G05)
Previous: RRS P400 HST, F15 M50d,F15 30d Msport, E70 35d Msport, 530i, Boxster, 330Ci Sport Vectra GSi, Chevrolet Lumina, Vxl Astras

It'll be allright in the end. If it isn't allright it isn't the end

I can see this being an issue !

There had to be one good reason somewhere to have one

The reason on why I did not take that on any of my recent new cars. Even I would be able to intercept the code from the key. I don't really think it is that great an option, especially if you read that if you wash the car that the boot keeps opening as it thinks you want to open it by proximity (Porsche at least).

I gave BMW a ring on the number given on Watchdog to check my cars status. Turns out it is affected (not surprising, given it's a Feb 2010 build) and hasn't been updated. They promised to get back to me with arrangements within 5 working days. Surprise, surprise, nothing yet  >:(. Might just bypass them and get on to the selling dealer (Rybrooks in Shrewsbury).
