Airbag

Post by henrym3 » Sun Dec 23, 2018 1:52 pm

As you will have read previously I had a recall for my 16 year old steering wheel airbag. This is jst to post progress so far:-
Visit 1
Airbag changed.
Visit 2
To have the airbag light put out after 5 miles driving
Visit 3
To remove airbag and record the serial number
Visit 4
To remove airbag and record the correct serial number
Visit 5
Awaiting, To have the airbag light put out. Came on after I arrived home (7 miles)
Draw your own conclusions on dealer efficiency

I’d find a different dealer if I was you! Doesn’t say much about their ‘technicians’ does it :x

Our E46 has had two airbag recalls, and both required a single visit.

Charge them the HMRC mileage rate per mile £0.45p for each visit. Or £200 per hour for your labour 8)

is there a way to find out if your car has outstanding recalls without a visit to a dealer

Here: https://www.gov.uk/check-vehicle-recall

What it won’t cover is any Quality Enhancements because they are not covered by the DVSA formal recalls process. Car Manufacturers can do QE work without formally declaring as a safety issue :x

A BMW Dealer only needs to read your key to check the current recall status, and it’s a free service.

Perhaps in hindsight (which is a wonderful thing) I should have worked on the principle "if it’s lasted 16 years it will probably be ok". I have had air bag off several times to fit m3 wheel then paddles and never had an issue on refitting and obviously never thought the dealer would.
My appointment is for Thursday. Interestingly the faults (2) will not clear with my kit.

The recall is either the one for ‘damp’ explosive (so it goes pphhutttt rather than BANG!) or for shrapnel in your face.....nice! Most of us will never (hopefully) need to find out if they work properly, but still. And yes I too firmly believe in if it ain’t broke.........

If it won't clear the airbag ecu may be faulty after being triggered a couple of times ,I know on my e46 the second time the airbag light came on it was another ecu was needed (first was my own fault for testing the window after fitting a new regulator and not putting the locking clip back on the airbag plug) as It couldn't be connect too anymore.

Well, my attitude is that it was fine before so I want it back the same way.

When I went in to have a new key coded, the airbag was changed without even anything been said, as I hadn't had the car long.

All done very efficiently by Sopers in Lincoln.

To continue.
Visit 5
They checked vehicle wiring and found NO fault but found the new air bag was faulty. Fitted another new airbag and assured me the fault has now been put to bed. Light came on after 5 miles?
Visit 6
Has been arranged for 7/01/19. As this is the first date they can supply me with a replacement car. Pissed off siting in the showroom. I might ask for the old bag to be refitted.

To finish this off, got the X back yesterday afternoon, they had it for just over a day, apparently had to change one of the plugs on the bag, used it a few times now without problem so hopefully this issue has now been put to bed.

What a palaver Henry, I was lucky with mine, aren’t enough time to cram down enough free coffee and biscuits to justify the fuel, glad you’re all sorted in the end, better than metal in the face if the worst happens!
