Bmw x5 4.8is (2005) inactive suspension

Post by Tariq1980 » Sun Jun 09, 2019 10:22 pm

Hi
Having issues with the suspension...I've had the x5 4.8is for several months and suspension has been fine went up and down on the button then all of a sudden 2 days after fitting some wheel spacers, the car was fully down and on starting instead of the pump starting and raising the car it jus stayed low (looks great) and the warning came in the dash and the ride is really really bumpy.
Any ideas?
Thanks for reading

Have a look at the level sensors they could be in the wrong position after lifting the car.

The ball joints on the level sensors are weak, so may have corroded and broke when you lifted the car. This happened on mine. It basically wasn't giving a level reading to the car for it to set the level of the suspension.

From your description is the pump running but not lifting the car or is the pump not running at all?
First I would check the work you did to make sure you haven't dislodged a cable somewhere, though just fitting spacers I don't think you would be near the sensors
If the pump is running and not raising the car I would look for a leak
If the pump starts and stops check the sensors
If the pump isn't running at all check the fuses in the right hand rear cubby

I wouldn't drive it on the bump stops as you may cause damage to the airbags and possibly sensors

The pump used to work and then since the warnings been up nothing no compressor sound...I've checked the 2 fuses in the rear right cubby and both seem ok...waiting for the weather to get better and I'll.check the sensors and wires...

Don't just check the fuses change them, I had a similar issue 30amp fuse looked OK swapped it and everything started working? plus check the relay.
If the pump isn't trying to run then I would look there first, hopefully it isn't the pump its self.

When you are checking the sensors the knuckle faces the wheel

Parts list shows it in with the compressor. This is a 4.6 pic though

Just an update on this the suspension is still inactive had it reset to standard height so driving isnt affected anymore and the error code came up as rear left solenoid valve.
Spoken to BMW regarding the part and then havent got a clue what it is...seen some for sale on Ebay just need to know which one to get...any help is appreciated
Thanks

Part 19 is the level sensor ( 37 14 6 755 045 ) and seems to fit either side and is common with all e53 except the 4.6ltr

So are the level sensors and solenoid valve the same thing

I’m not aware of any solenoid valves, perhaps that is what your diagnostics tool is calling it. Mine calls it a level sensor. I’ve looked through the parts list and don’t see any references to solenoids, As your tool says "rear left" that would imply that there is one on each corner, so I suspect it is referring to the level sensor. Just my opinion.

The 4.8 had the option of twin axle air suspension so there is a valve block/unit to distribute air similar to the Range Rover (actually identical to the L322)

Have you checked newtis.info for twin axle air suspension there should be diagrams and how too's there
