Sorry to hear of this unwanted expense.

Maybe also call Richard at Barker Motor Works Haslemere I believe he may have a useful ZF contact for replacements ;)

Maybe mention the advice to contact him came from me via this forum if so inclined...........I am yet to meet him but we have spoken before on a couple of occasions. I once helped him source used catalysts for his E53 X5 & he is aware I admin on here. Your call maybe of use, if not then you've only lost the cost of a call.

Appreciate folk are talking in hypotheticals but some could argue it's not wise to openly discuss making a criminally fraudulent claim ;)

Did you call Richard ?

There's a auto transmission shop in Dartford - JT Automatics
I emailed them yesturday and they got back to me saying £1735 inc VAT for reconditioned g'box, supplied & fitted. So might have to take them up on that as soon as ive saved the money! :(
This price also includes a 2 year, 24000 mile warrenty. 8-)
I know its not much comfort but that seems a reasonable price especially as its fitted. I wouldnt touch a second hand auto box, as even if they have a warranty with them, there is still all the hassle of getting the box off again if(when) it fails.

A bit of confusion here the £1735 inc vat for is for a secondhand reconditioned box, (uncertain what reconditioning is done).

Good you got a quote from Dartford for a recon unit, although I think X5sport was suggesting you got a quote for yours to be fixed.

Richard at Barkers quoted £1800 plus vat for brand new ZF supplied box equating to £2160 inc vat......For me, (if looking at replacements only), then it's a no brainer & I would go for the new box - even if a little more expensive. I would only consider a repair if able to achieve same for a significant saving over a replacment box.

I thought Richard would be competitive as I prior discussed box costs with him when we spoke re expenses involved to deal with such failures on our cars.

If you check with main dealer you will see what a good price he has quoted..........

Richard used to be a head or lead technician at BMW so knows his stuff - he also actually owns an E53 X5 & comes across as both decent & genuine.

Just to add that two indies I know locally to you have prior said they use a couple of specialists link1 and link 2 .........Maybe worth a couple of calls albeit I doubt you will get better new price than from Richard.

Good Luck whatever you decide...............Ideally don't leave it too long to decide or you might end up with extra costs to get car to chosen workshop on a trailer.

£2k for a brand new unit sounds very good indeed, especially when you consider my complete rebuild was £2k. Might it not actually be a 're-manufactured' unit at that price though? Mind you even if it is, if it's coming direct from the OEM then only the case, shafts and gears are likely to be original as everything else will have been replaced. They will probably transfer your existing Mechatronics unit (the gearbox's brain) onto the replacement box. A straight swap is easier than rebuilding - and quicker - so the labour charge will be a lot less.

I expect your damaged box has to be handed back and gets sent to ZF for complete overhaul. Even the BMW replacement boxes are remanufactured by ZF and not brand new which makes their charges even more incredible. They must have a 100% markup!!

I hope you get it all fixed and back on the road quickly. I feel for you, especially having been there myself just a year ago.

My assumption was Richard quoted for a new unit albeit my assumption based on my ignorence BMW supplied exchange & reconditioned units. All I know is that he prior indicated reasonable costs were achievable due to him having a useful sourcing contact ;)
