Crankshaft Pulley Replacement

Hi. I need to replace a crank pulley that broke up with the outer section seperating from the main part. I'm finding it extremely difficult to get hold of the castle spanner to lock the crank in South Africa and have seen a few videos on YouTube where they just jam the flywheel either with a chisel from underneath or by using a pin from the back of the engine.
I don't have the breaker bars to loosen and tighten the bolt and my local mechanic doesn't believe jamming the flywheel is a good idea considering the force needed to loosen and tighten the bolt. I also saw another YouTube clip where the guy wrapped the old belt around the pulley to act like an oil filter wrench and got the bolt loosened and tightened that way.
Has anyone done this job without the correct castle spanner/locking tool and if so how did you manage it and were there any issues to look out for.
Thanks
