M Sport Heated Wheel on 2009 X6

Post by carlos50 » Fri Apr 06, 2012 12:37 pm

Hi all

Does anyone know if the new 2011 /2012 M Sport heated steering wheel from the X5 or X6, with the newer style paddles, will be a plug and play fit onto my 2009 X6 35d and use the same airbag?

If so, being genuine BMW would it be a warranty problem since its not factory spec?

Thanks

Carl

Have a look at Realoem on line here: Realoem

Where it says 'Serial Number' put in the last 7-characters of your VIN. Select 'Switch to Pictures Drill Down' and see if it lists the steering wheel retrofit in the 'Steering' section. You can then check the steering wheel serial numbers against a newer version of the car by selecting another car.

The M Sport wheel is 'unsuitable' for my 2011 X6. It's not listed against a 2009 35d at all. What the differences are I don't know.

Realoem is a copy of the BMW Parts catalogue as used by Dealers, just a few months behind. The latest version is Dec 2011.

I have entered my chassis no and it shows the performance steering wheel as a retrofit, the one with the flat bottom, so in theory the M one should fit, shouldn't it?

On xoutposts, lots have tried this retrofit and failed. The car requires additional modules and coding, according to some members who have tried.

Sanj, am I right in thinking its the heated part thats the problem and the wheel itself will fit, or are the paddles an issue also?

I've noticed what appears to be smoother / nappa leather on the newer X6 as oppose to the grained leather on my 2009, is this a correct assumption?

I know on my 2011MY 40d which has a heated wheel can be fitted with the 'Performance Wheel', but I would lose the heating function. The standard wheel fitted to the 40d is grained, only the 'Performance Wheel' has the alcantara leather and is listed.

What the differences are for the M Sport Wheel must be very subtle. We already have the right modules as the X6 has paddle shifters. The E70 didn't and hence all the coding problems they are experiencing trying to fit that type of wheel to the car. Module 255 is missing so the E70 computer system doesn't know what to do with it. I've not seen an 'M Sport' wheel in the flesh, so I don't know whether is has different buttons and that is the issue rather than whether or not it will physically fit.

I'm not bothered......but HRH insisted! It was part of the 'Yes you can have an X6' approvals package - if you know what I mean..... :?

PS: I wear Harley-Davidson thin leather motorcycle/driving gloves if it's either that cold, or for long journeys.

Er....No, and coz I have big hands and find the wheel a little 'thin' and therefore uncomfortable, and I can't fit the Performance Wheel which feels much nicer.. :)

They're only very thin driving gloves that the Americans would wear (bought them in Mexico) and not the Alpinestars type things. If you came off a bike whilst wearing them they won't save your hands at all. No protection. They only just cover to the watch band part of the wrist... :)
