Remap or Tuning Box

in the next few months (after the kit has been fitted) i want to remap the x6. However i'm not sure weather go for one of theses plug in tune boxes (seem easy enough to fot and not that expensive) or get a remap.

Has anyone on here used a tuning box as opposed to a remap. I'm being drawn to the tuning box as I can unplug it when i want, and also if BMW decide to flash my ECU for what ever reason I wont loose my map

any preferance, there seem to be a fair few tuning boxes ranging from 100 quid up to 399, they all seem to offer the same kind of gains..

From way back in the day, tuning boxes were really poor and not worth the money. Probably a lot better now I'm guessing but for me it's always been a remap.

Don't companies that remap, cover the car if Flashed by dealer and reinstall? At the end of the day you have paid for the software, it's not like you're getting the use of it on more than one car. I would certainly ask the question.

I'd say remap too, as it is personalised to your own car, so not just using a bog standard map. Also be wary of remapping if you have any sort of valid BMW or extended warranty as they do not like it one bit and will find an excuse not to cover you for as many parts as they can (eg. excessive wear to wiper blades caused by g force LOL). But they will.........

If you have a good relationship with your dealer then tbh it will be fine.

With mine as modded as it is, I still had plenty of warranty covered items done by Sytner no probs at all.

I didn't think tuning boxes were as safe as remaps

Sorry but I cannot imagine a dealer who knows about a remap playing fair if it ever came to replacement boxes, turbos, or similar, no matter how well you knew them. I have practical experience of BMW sending in an independent assessor (2 years ago on my 535d to be exact) when it comes to them effectively paying out for expensive warranty work. At that stage my car was checked for modifications, as the report included a comment on 'no modifications' or suchlike (they flashed it at me briefly).

But good luck if you ever did manage it

Dealers can and will put through warranty work if they believe they can without any issues. As I said, I've had lots of warranty work down on all of my previous cars including the X5 and all are plenty modded. My M5 was with Benhams (along with BMW GB's technical team) for 3 weeks and went through all sorts to source and warranty repair it and that's with it remapped, custom exhaust, full BBKs, RPI scoops and filters, Eibach springs, etc.

I do believe it is down to the dealer tbh.

I'm with snipes on this one. The Dealer may co-operate, but with these current generation cars being so 'connected' and the fault recording systems telling all sorts of tales on Owners, it might be BMW GB that says no when the PUMA Case arrives with them. The cars even have an Ethernet port on them to BMW GB can (if they choose) connect directly to the car.

One flag of the 'wrong sort' and add the possibility of BMW having a 'bad month' and a large bill or a repair refusal might wing it's way back to the unsuspecting owners. It's not the Dealers that concern me, it's BMW themselves as they are just so inconsistent in their 'support'.

but I still want a remap now as the tuning box doesnt seem like a good option...I think i'll do it next year some time. I havent enjoyed the car yet as i've either got it in pieces or its too clean to drive lol!
