Panoramic roof.?

Post by Nine468 » Sat Aug 17, 2013 1:30 pm

Hi .
This is my first post on here.
Im looking at getting a E70 X5 soon, and im doing some homework on them.
I was originally looking for a E61 535d [touring] but cant find one to meet my exacting standards...
So the search turned to a E70..
Anyway...
The E61,s suffer from water ingress into the boot floor area from the drain tubes of the pano roof, causing the ecu,s that hide under there to get wet and damaged.....
My question is,,, do the E70,s have the same problems...
Thanks....

Having owned both cars I'd keep the search on for the 535, it is a much better car.

I had sunroof on both and had no end of probs with the E70 one.

I've got the panoramic roof on my 2010 E70 - no problems after 3 and a half years.  I don't open the roof that often though - mainly it's for the better interior light.  The internal shade gets moved a lot, positioned to help reduce glare depending on position of sun re direction of travel.

I also found the roof really noisy open even in so called comfort position on the E 70

No such problems with current car or 535

Thanks for the replies folks. :)
The main problem ive read about is the drain tubes that allow any water to drain away to the ground/outside the car, have a small filter gizmo in them , this over time gets blocked up and the water then flows nicely into the boot floor area, causing the ecu,s that are down there to get damaged.  :( :( All this can be unknown about until the electrical items stop working, costing ££££,$$$$$, to fix....
This ive only read about on the E61 5 series tourings with a pano roof.
Ive no idea if this happens on the E70,s that's why I asked the question....

The problem that the E53 suffered more from, and it may become the same in the E70, was mechanical failure of the rear section drives.  This could only be fixed by replacing the 'cassette'.  A number of owners disabled the rear section into a fixed position which solved the issue.

If the cassette design was moved across from the E53 to the E70 then the same problem may be waiting to bite owners as the cars age.

I ended up getting a new cassette after many fights with BMW.

Any idea what caused the mechanical failure.?
Was it lack of lubrication.?
