Euro 5/6?
« on: May 13, 2018, 02:30:01 PM »
I'm thinking of changing the X5 for something newer.  I've tried a few things including petrol cars but would consider an F25 X3 or possibly a late E70 X5.

The problem I have is that I don't want to buy a car which causes problems not far down the line due to not being Euro 6, particularly as although we don't live in London we are in Manchester so things could follow suit.

Now I could afford to buy a later car which is Euro 5 so say a post 2014 facelift 35d but I could also pay probably £10k less for a pre facelift model and would probably go that way if it weren't for this concern.

The engine stated specs seem to be the same.  Can anyone shed any light on whether this should be of significant concern?  What about the new efficiency tests etc?  I know a bit but am struggling.

I am still running a EU4 3-series and EU5 X6 with no plans to do anything about it due to low annual mileage’s on both.  Our commuter car will be an EU6 220d.  Come end of Summer the E46 will just go back into storage.

The new ‘real world’ test regime only applies to new models going forward and not to those on the market today unless they have a brand new engine design - since September 2017.  Existing engines remain outside the scope.  BMW have already told me that the B47 engine in my new one ‘predates’ the regulation change (despite it being modified since then) and although it may be tested to the new regime, it will be the old one that it is compliant with.  Further changes happen in September this year with the next block applying a year later.

As to what will or will not be a concern?  Who knows.  The current confusion that reigns throughout the UK car industry is likely to continue for the foreseeable future and the current lack of clarity along with it.  All that can be done is to start increasing VED year on year, however even then that is unlikely to be effective.

I suspect that the real targets will be for the pre-EU4 cars, or even earlier generations which have little or no emissions control and from what I see on the road every day, smoke like chimneys.  At least EU5 and newer have DPF systems.

Thanks.  I'm toying between Audi RS4 B8 (very tempted but other considerations), F25 X3 pre or post facelift, Audi SQ5 or possibly a high spec facelift E70 X5 (I had ruled them out due to being Euro 5).  I am also very slightly tempted by an E70 X5M but that's probably a step too far on the madness scale.

Having driven a 335D Xdrive Touring I just put a deposit down on a different one subject to inspecting it in the next few days.  The RS4 is where my heart is/was but having driven them both, was very impressed by the 3 series and it worries me less in some respects.  Is there anything in particular to check with these?  It's low mileage and only a couple of years old so still has a warranty.

Change of plan.  Looks like I'm remaining in the commnunity as I've just bought an F25 X3 35D M Sport which came up for sale locally :-)
