Early E70 diesels fall into the higher tax bands -I think 2006-2008 models.  Later ones not.  All X5Ms do as stated.
Did you mean X5M or the E70 Msport models?

Well mine has one -2012 40d 7 seater Msport .  It has the TV option too.  I don’t need 7 seats or rear entertainment but bought the car as it had so many other options and I like the front tv/dvd player.  Like X5Sport said, very expensive option so not that many out there. But they are there if you look and up your budget a little.

General X5 Forum (E70) / Re: A star tyres , myth or fact
« on: April 14, 2018, 07:19:39 PM »
My E70 40d has had only * marked tyres and has been under BMW warranty all its life so far, but that didn’t stop the transfer box knackering itself - posted about it on here. Covered by warranty and yes, they did go through the whole tyre thing and if they had not been *marked there would have been an issue.  tyres all star marked so no issue.

So the transfer boxes can give up even on a car with * marked tyres.   My reason for buying star marked is down to the warranty issues if I don’t.

Plus the diff has just been replaced on the recall.

Problems / Re: I just can’t catch a break with this car
« on: March 20, 2018, 05:50:03 PM »
Some dealers employ someone to deal exclusively with warranty repairs and get things moving quickly -obviously your dealer is not one of those or it would have been sorted.  Every now and then a “Monday morning” car comes along which has nothing  but problems, constantly.  No way of knowing I suppose, its a gamble we take when we buy them.  And its not just one make or model of car, they are all affected.......

But incredibly frustrating to be treated with such indifference,  hope you get it sorted soon. Are you in their loan car still?

Absolutely. See the photo I posted in the E70 thread -this is NOT a QE, it is a RECALL.    For anyone in doubt, check the photo!

The service manager claimed this was “different” to the previous QE.   My E70 had the propshaft changed yesterday.  Allegedly there was “a lot of play and movement” in it despite there being nothing wrong (allegedly) in December 2017 when the QE check was done........ hmmmmm.   lies and main dealers.......

I guess you don’t HAVE to do anything......it’s your car, your call.......I know what I would do, at least call in at the dealers and check, its a free repair anyway.  And its not a QE this time........

Just to add, this is actually a recall, not a quality enhancement - the letter from BMW arrived today in an envelope edged with red and marked clearly MOTOR VEHICLE RECALL NOTICE.     The propshafts on these cars need to be changed - so please contact your dealer if you own an E70 to check if it one of those affected.  The earlier issue was apparently a QE and allegedly not the same as this one............

Happy to take a photo of the recall notice.........

Cars older than 5years usually qualify for the “Value” servicing offer, so early F15s should qualify now.

E53s are worth whatever someone will pay for them these days, likely worth far more to current owner, especially if a well kept example as yours seems to be.   Lucky to get a few grand for a nice one 😰

As for E70 vs E53,  its a totally different beast esp if you go LCI with 8sp box and the 40d with its twin turbo........the E53 feels quite agricultural in comparison..........

 Will get the local garage to take a look when the suspension is done, not keen on melted fingertips!

It could never be simple with a BMW main dealer.........after nearly 4hours waiting (BMW did send out for some lunch for me at least) they decided they needed a different part and could only get it on Monday, so they gave me their new X3 to take home and on a long trip to Wales on Monday.

I did quiz them about the recall and from the bemused reaction I got, I don’t think they really checked it properly the first time, when they claimed they had done. No record of it, apparently (strange) and I believe from the tech ths time that there is “a lot of movement” so it must be changed before disaster strikes..........well ok, but why not do it the first time, they get paid to do it by BMW its not like they suffer in any way!

And after getting the usual video showing decent amounts still on brake pads etc, I get a last minute by the way, it wasn’t “immediately obvious” but one of the pads had worn down to metal (checked while they were doing the MOT) and had to be changed instantly along with the discs.  Sigh.  :( not like thats somethng I ever want main dealers to do but am over a barrel with this one so will just go with it this time.  :( :(

The X3 is ok, not exciting enough to want one, but its quite nice.   Better than a one series loaner, at least.  I miss my comfort seats and electric everything, but the new idrive on the X3 is very nice to use.

Roll on Monday, at least the car will have a shiny new propshaft join the slightly less shiny transfer box which was replaced under warranty last year.  Thank heavens for the warranty generally but sadly doesn’t cover the servicing stuff this time round and the recall is free anyway.
Today they spoke about the issues being a “recall” rather than quality enhancement and kept talking about all the dire consequences, so why on earth have owners not had official notification when the cars in the main dealer network still?    Grrr.  I smell a rat. Or incompetence.  Or worse.

Been at Sytner TW since 930am.....just a quick MOT I thought, plus a brake fluid and oil service. Away by 11ish I thought........

Luckily I brought laptop and ipad with ......... they decided to do the recall check (which they had previously said they had done and car did not need new propshaft ) and are changing the prop shaft........fortunately there was one in stock.
Laptop now more or less run out of charge and I forgot to bring the charger, so having to survive on ipad and phone now.   Sign.   Although pleased they are replacing the Propshaft.
So much for “value” servicing though, the MOT, oil service and brake fluid change are around £500😱😰 more sighs.

At least there is an endless supply of coffee and orange juice and the very nice service advisor has sent out for some lunch for me.........

As owner of both, I second the 8sp choice - plus the newer iDrive is definitely a plus worth having.  The 6sp in our old E53 still feels smooth, but in comparison the 8 in my 40d is sublime with quick and seamless changes.
